In plain English
A children’s whole life policy is a small permanent policy on a child or grandchild. The death benefit is not really the point. What you are buying is a guarantee that this child can own life insurance as an adult regardless of what their health looks like by then, at a premium locked in at a child’s rate. Many of these policies include a guaranteed purchase option that lets them add substantial coverage at set ages with no medical questions at all.
Best for: Parents and grandparents who want to hand a child something durable.
How it works
Children’s Whole Life, step by step
- 01
You take out a small policy
Usually somewhere between ten and fifty thousand dollars, on a child or grandchild, with you as the owner and payer.
- 02
The rate locks at a child’s age
That premium never increases. Sixty years from now they are still paying a rate calculated when they were six.
- 03
A purchase option protects their future
Most of these policies include the right to buy additional coverage at specified ages or life events, with no health questions asked. If they develop a condition at 30 that would otherwise make them uninsurable, that option is worth more than everything else in the contract.
- 04
Ownership passes to them
At an age you choose, typically the twenties, the policy becomes theirs. By then it has cash value they can borrow against and a benefit already in place before they have their own family.
Straight answer
What it does well, and where it falls short
Every product on this site has both. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling.
Strengths
- Guarantees a child can have coverage even if their health changes
- The lowest premium they will ever be offered, locked permanently
- Cash value has decades to compound
- A meaningful gift that does not get outgrown
Trade-offs
- Children rarely have an income to replace, so the death benefit is secondary
- Growth is modest compared to a dedicated education savings account
- Not a substitute for insuring the parents, which comes first
Is this you?
Children’s Whole Life usually makes sense when
If two or more of these describe your situation, this is worth a serious look.
- 01You already have adequate coverage on yourself
- 02There is a family history of a condition that affects insurability
- 03You are a grandparent looking for a gift with a long horizon
- 04You want to hand off something with real cash value at 25, not a savings bond
FAQ
Children’s Whole Life questions
The ones that come up in nearly every conversation about this product.
01Should I insure my child before myself?
No. Insure the people whose income the household depends on first, and by a wide margin. A children’s policy is a good idea once the adults are properly covered. Any agent who leads with a policy on your kid before asking what you have on yourself has their priorities backwards.02Is this better than a 529 plan for college?
For pure education savings, no. A 529 is purpose built and grows tax free for qualified expenses. A children’s whole life policy is buying insurability and permanence, with cash value as a secondary feature. They solve different problems, and plenty of families do both.03What if they do not want it as an adult?
They can surrender it for the accumulated cash value, keep it and take over the premium, or use the cash value to keep a reduced paid up amount without paying anything further. It is their asset by then, so it is their decision.
